The Yaesu FT-857 mobile is the identical radio inside as the FT-897 but its much smaller and lighter. Those issues aside, most folks in the group seem to like their radios and recommend them when a potential buyer asks. There are mods out there for adding external fans. General consensus is that you need to pay careful attention to station grounding and power down the radio when making/breaking connections. I think, in general, no compact radio is going to have sufficient filtering or DSP horsepower to match a full-tilt-boogie contest/DX rig.
